Situated in the north-west coast o f Sardinia island, a few metres upon sea livel and opposite to a wonderful roadsted (Rada di Alghero), Alghero is in the land of Sassari county, from which it is 35 km far. We have not well-grounded informations about Alghero birth, and the origin of its name is not sure too: maybe it rises from the arabian word “Al Giaz ir “ which means peninsula, while according to othee sources, the name would spring from the presence of big quantity of algas along the coast: here “Alguer". According to many historians, Alghero was estabilshed in 1102 thanks to the Doria family from Genoa. They strenghten an exsisting little town. IN a short time the town became an important businnes harbour so much that the Aragonese powerful force was very interested in it. In 1353 Alghero was conquered by them but, one year ago, Peter IV of Aragona threw out of the city Sardinians and genoese, to host the Catalan pe
ople. Aragonese domination first, and spanish one after, last for 4 centuries, and influenced culture, traditions, language and architecture. Now, people of Alghero speak the ALGHERESE LANGUAGE, a catalan dialect, while the rest of Sardinans speak the LINGUA SARDA (sardinian language).
Alghero town center is wraped between the stately walls and the 7 towers built by aragonese people. A few towers are open as place for art and photographs exibitions. Traditional rituals are very interisting because show the big influence of living catalan culture: the biggest example is the "Holy Week" (holy songs and mysteries in catalan dialect).
Alghero major sources are turism first, also oil growing, vine-growing and wine production, fishing and sheep farming. The gold and red coral manifacturing are very important too in Alghero economy:
the red coral manifacturing is considered one of the most estimeed in the world. It gives for this reason the name to the Alghero sea: “La Riviera del Corallo“. Know alll over the world, Alghero has every year, thousand of turists, attracted by the natural beauties of its territory. Porto Conte is a very beautiful harbour sorrounded by the calcareus headlands of Ounta Giglio and Capo Caccia in which lies the very famous Nettuno's Caves. Wonderful caves for its stalactites, stalagmites and the Green Cave. Romans called this wondrful harbour “Portus Ninpharum“.
Alghero has charming beaches: Le Bombarde, Spiaggia del Lazzaretto, Lido di San Giovanni, Pineta di Maria Pia.
